Motion Amplification for Paper Mill Vibration Analysis:
Solving a Roll Vibration IssueProject Overview
Unexpected vibration can lead to costly downtime, premature equipment wear, and difficult maintenance decisions in paper mills. While alignment is often suspected as the cause, vibration problems aren't always what they seem.
This case study demonstrates how True North Metrology & Alignment used Motion Amplification to diagnose the true source of a roll vibration issue before a scheduled shutdown. By combining advanced vibration analysis with precision metrology services, we helped the customer identify the root cause, support the repair, and verify the results after startup.
"In this case, the vibration signature indicated that alignment was not the primary issue. Instead, the analysis pointed to a bent roll shaft as the most likely source of the excessive vibration."

Supporting the Repair
After the damaged roll was removed and replaced, True North remained on site to support the installation using precision laser tracker technology.
Our field team aligned the replacement roll level and square to the adjacent roll, ensuring proper machine geometry before startup. Combining precision metrology with Motion Amplification allowed the customer to address both the mechanical repair and the installation accuracy during the same outage.
Verifying the Results
Once production resumed, we performed a second Motion Amplification analysis under normal operating conditions.
The follow-up inspection confirmed that the excessive vibration had been eliminated and that the roll was operating as intended. Rather than assuming the repair had been successful, the customer received documented verification that the root cause had been resolved.
This final validation provided confidence that the machine could return to production without lingering reliability concerns.
Why Motion Amplification Matters for Paper Mills
Paper mills rely on hundreds of rotating components operating together with tight mechanical tolerances. Even small vibration issues can contribute to accelerated bearing wear, roll damage, unexpected downtime, reduced product quality, and increased maintenance costs.
Motion Amplification gives maintenance teams a powerful diagnostic tool by allowing them to observe equipment movement while machines remain in operation. When combined with precision measurement and alignment services, it provides a complete picture of machine health—from identifying the true source of a problem to verifying that repairs have been successful.
Rather than replacing parts based on assumptions, facilities can make informed maintenance decisions backed by measurable data.
The Outcome
This project demonstrates the value of combining multiple technologies into a single maintenance solution.
Using Motion Amplification and precision metrology, True North helped the customer:
- Diagnose the true source of the vibration before the scheduled shutdown
- Avoid unnecessary alignment work
- Replace the correct component with confidence
- Precisely align the new roll during installation
- Verify that the repair successfully eliminated the vibration
- Return the machine to production with confidence
By combining advanced diagnostics with precision measurement, True North helped the customer make informed maintenance decisions, minimize downtime, and return critical equipment to service with confidence.
